Connect an AI
An assistant such as Claude or Cursor can create and edit parts in Ply3D for you. The connection is
local: Ply3D runs an MCP server only on your Mac, and nothing from your design leaves it this way.
1. Turn it on in Ply3D
- Open Ply3D and click AI → Connect AI (or the menu Ply3D → Connect AI (MCP)…).
- Turn on Allow an AI to control Ply3D.
- Pick your assistant and click Copy: the configuration already has the right path.
2. Set up the assistant
Claude Desktop: Settings → Developer → Edit Config, paste what you copied and restart Claude.
{
"mcpServers": {
"ply3d": { "command": "/Applications/Ply3D.app/Contents/MacOS/ply3d-mcp" }
}
}
Claude Code: in Terminal.
claude mcp add ply3d -- /Applications/Ply3D.app/Contents/MacOS/ply3d-mcp
Cursor: the same JSON as Claude Desktop in ~/.cursor/mcp.json (or Settings → MCP → Add).
Other clients: MCP over HTTP at http://127.0.0.1:47131/mcp with the
Authorization: Bearer <token> header that Ply3D shows.
3. Ask it for things
For example: “In Ply3D, design a 60×40×30 mm box with a snap-fit lid and 2 mm walls, to print in PLA.”
The AI builds the part with parameters, looks at it, measures it and explains how to adjust it. Every step lands
in the timeline and can be undone with ⌘Z. The Connect AI panel shows everything it does.
Security: the server listens only on 127.0.0.1, requires a token unique to your Mac and is off by
default. Turn it off when you're not using it. “New Token” invalidates any previous configuration.
The guide the AI receives
It's the same guide Ply3D hands the assistant when it connects
(guide.md). It's updated here, with no need to update the app.
